A TPD compliant e-liquid must have a nicotine levels of no more than 20mg/ml which is commonly written as 2% concentration on e-liquid bottles.

If you are a heavy smoker and heavily rely on nicotine e-cigarettes to help quit tobacco cigarettes, you will notice the biggest change when vaping e-liquids with different strengths of nicotine.

For most people that only vape and have little or no experience with traditional cigarettes, the nicotine level shouldn’t prove too much of a problem. Even a 1.8% nicotine strength is considered high and as such many vapers choose something in the 0.6%-1.8% range. If you are a cloud chaser after the biggest vape clouds, you should opt for very low or even nicotine-free e-liquid.

List of Ingredients
E-liquid manufacturers are now required to list all the ingredients which make up over 0.1% of the final formulation of any e-liquid. This is great news as it means we’ll know what’s in our e-liquids and you don’t need to worry about cheap or imported e-liquids with bad ingredients. Any e-liquid marketed as TPD compliant must come in child-resistant packaging and show evidence of the packaging has been tampered with. They also must come with instructions about safe product use and storage.

Banned Ingredients
As well as needing to label e-liquids with a full ingredients list, manufacturers are now not allowed to use certain ingredients. TPD compliant e-liquids are banned from containing any colourings, caffeine and taurine (an amino acid sometimes added to energy drinks). This shouldn’t affect flavour or throat hit from any e-liquids, but it might be noticeable to those who like a caffeine buzz when their favourite vape e-liquid.

Bottle Size
TPD compliant e-liquids can’t be sold in a refill container over 10ml in size. Along with this, tanks can no longer be manufactured with an e-liquid capacity of over 2ml. Models are being released to help give sub-ohm vapers more tank space through clever use of slimline coils in TPD-compliant vape kits.

Notification
All new TPD compliant e-liquids and e-cigarettes need to submit their product to MHRA six months before it is put on sale in the UK. While we might see innovative e-liquid flavours arriving slower than before, this will mean better safety for vapers in the long run.
